S.W.A.T is comprised of twenty members with an additional three tactical medics. S.W.A.T. is available for call-out 24-7 and is used in Special Threat Situations such as barricaded subjects, hostage rescue, sniper, acts of terrorism, high risk felony warrant service, riot control and dignitary protection.
Any certified Sheriff’s Office employee with a minimum two years patrol experience may apply for a position on the team. Anyone trying out must first submit a resume and letter of intent. Once accepted the applicant must pass the following: physical fitness test, Tactical Team obstacle course, four firearms courses, a psychological exam and finally appear before a board made up of Tactical Team members. The Tactical Team trains a minimum of 8 hours a month as a team, with individual groups training additional hours.
S.W.A.T works in conjunction with Critical Incident Commanders, Crisis Negotiations Team, and Detective crime scene units.
