Pre-Employment Testing for Certified Law Enforcement Positions

In order to apply for the certified law enforcement positions (Deputy, Reserve Deputy) the applicant must be a Texas Certified Peace Officer prior to application.  In addition to being certified by TCLEOSE as a Texas Peace Officer, applicants applying for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office certified positions are required to pass the Montgomery County Physical Agility Course, pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) and pass the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course in order to advance to the background investigation stage of the application process.

Physical Agility Course

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has designed the Physical Agility Course to be as job related as possible.  This course was designed to measure the basic physical skills necessary for successful performance as an entry level law enforcement officer.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV).  Applicants needing additional information regarding the course should contact the Recruiting Division.

National Police Officer Selection Course

The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) designed by Stanard & Associates, Inc. is administered to measure three (3) primary cognitive skills (reading, writing, and mathematics) which are critical to successfully learning and performing the law enforcement officer job.  The test is specifically divided into sections measuring Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course.

MCSO Firearms Qualification Course

The Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course is administered by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office
Academy personnel.  This course is designed to measure the applicant's competency in the use of firearms.  The applicant must pass with a minimum score of 80% in order to be given an application for employment for the law enforcement position he or she is seeking.  Successful passing of all three (3) tests is necessary for the applicant to be given an employment application for review by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
