Pre-Employment Testing for Detention Officer Positions

Individuals testing for the Detention Officer position are required to pass the Montgomery County Physical Agility Course and pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) in order to be given an employment application for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and advance to the background investigation stage of the application process.

Physical Agility Course

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department has designed the physical agility test to be as job related as possible.  This course was designed to measure the basic physical skills necessary for successful performance as an entry level law enforcement officer. This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV).

National Police Officer Selection Course

The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) designed by Stanard & Associates, Inc. is administered to measure three (3) primary cognitive skills (reading, writing and mathematics) which are critical to successfully learning and performing the law enforcement officer job.  The test is specifically divided into sections measuring Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course.
Applicants who successfully pass both tests may be given an employment application for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department at this stage of the application process.
